Heat Pumps

Whole home comfort systems

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are a great way to save some money on your heating costs and they’re also a big help when trying to stay cool during the summer months. Heat pumps are devices that attach to your existing furnace and work by drawing heat from one area and releasing it in another area. They work in a similar way as refrigerators and air conditioners, and they can be used to either heat or cool spaces. The addition of a heat pump to your home in Vancouver will benefit you all year long.

Heat pumps are already more efficient and environmentally friendly than most heating units but we have taken this technology one step further by offering solar powered heat pumps to our customers. What would you say to having a heat pump that could work off solar panels, and when not running, send that collected energy into your home to be used by your other electrical appliances? This is what our featured Lennox XP25, XP21 & XP17 heat pumps can do.

Thomson Industries has been serving the heating and cooling needs of our clients in Burnaby, Vancouver and the surrounding areas since 1996. We would be happy to advise you on the right units to fit your needs and budget. If you would like to explore the idea of adding a heat pump to your existing furnace, just give us a call or drop us an email, and one of our home comfort specialists will be happy to give you a free in home consultation.

  • What do Heat Pumps do?

What Heat Pumps Do: A heat pump is an electrical device that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another. Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating a substance called a refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. A compressor pumps the refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In one coil, the refrigerant is evaporated at low pressure and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed en route to the other coil, where it condenses at high pressure. At this point, it releases the heat it absorbed earlier in the cycle.

  • So what's the difference between a Air Conditioner & a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an air conditioner in the summer and a reverse air conditioner in the winter. An Air Conditioner is just an air conditioner.

So, during the summer, the heat pump extracts heat from your indoor air making it cool, transfers the heat through the refrigerant and releases it to the outside. Have you ever felt the hot air blowing out of your outside condenser unit in the summer? A heat pump will look and feel just the same.

Now, in the winter, the heat pump takes that hot air and, instead of venting it to the outside, it pushes it into your home. The outside unit of a heat pump system works ALL year, not just in the summer like an air conditioner.

Since the outside unit is providing the hot air, a heat pump system does NOT have a furnace. Instead, it utilizes an air handler to circulate the air through your home.
