- Aren’t solar panels just for heating water?
That was the case at one time but not any longer. Lennox has developed the Sun Source solar panels that power the Lennox XP17 heat pump. When the HVAC system is not operating the panels will send the power they generate to other electric appliances in your home.
- Does the Sun Source solar panel system qualify for any of the government grant programs?
Not at this time. Although they do not qualify under the current program they are still a great way to save money on your energy bills, especially if your current HVAC system operates on oil or electricity.
- How much can I actually save by using the Sun Source solar panel system?
There are many variables to consider when estimating cost savings, such as: the insulation factor of your home, the cost of your heating fuel source, lifestyle, temperature extremes, and the number of solar panels used from 1 to amaximum of 15 panels.
Lennox has a published “Estimated Annual Costs Savings” that shows region 5 which is all of Canada, and is based on running a 10 SEER heat pump and the percent saving for Canada were based on 2750 heating load hours. Keeping this in mind the numbers work like this: for a 3 ton heat pump (XP17-036) and a single solar panel the average savings would be approximately 23%. Using the same heat pump and running 5 solar panels the average savings would be approximately 31%, with running same heat pump with 10 panels the approximate savings would be 42%. If you use the maximum number of panels, which is 15, they estimate the savings to be approximately 53%.
- What do I need to take full advantage of the Sun Source solar panel system?
As with installing any heat pump system you need to have 240V power available, you also need to have adequate roof space to accommodate the number of solar panels you are planning to purchase, as each panel requires 15 sq.ft.of roof space. You also should have an “always on” internet connection with a broadband router in order to use the Envoy Communications Gateway which allows you to connect to the system monitoring service.
- Is there any special maintenance required for the Sun Source solar panel system?
As with any heat pump system it is suggested that the system is serviced annually. With solar panels it is advised to keep the panels free of dirt build up and tree debris, so it is suggested that you inspect and clean the panels according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If the panels are installed in dusty areas they may require more inspections and cleaning. Keep in mind cleaning your panels is not for cosmetic reasons; it needs to be clean to operate at its rated capacity.
